Clearing Your Calendar
Categorizing That Works
by Kathleen Edelstein
Have you ever gotten to the end of a week and thought, “Where did that go?” Better yet, when haven’t you had that thought? Today’s society is so full of work, activities for the kids, social obligations and social media that the time simply seems to fly by. It doesn’t have to be this way all of the time, however.
Take a good hard look at your schedule and decide what truly needs to be there. Of course, there are tasks and appointments that must be kept such as projects that require your expertise at work, doctor’s appointments, and the like; however, there are many that can and should be deleted.
Think about each “category” of your life and decide if it warrants being part of your daily life/schedule. You can break it down into categories such as: Work, Family & Activities, and Entertainment. Then list all of the items for the week under their appropriate categories. For example, your list might look something like this:
Work
- Marketing development with the sales team
- Project review with staff
- Lunch with boss
- Meeting with upper management to review goals
Family & Activities
- Sally’s soccer practice
- Game night
- Joe’s drum practice
- Church
- Dentist appointment
- My volleyball game
Entertainment
- Party on Saturday for Sally’s friend
- Cookout on Sunday for family
- Swimming at the lake Saturday morning
After you have listed all of the items for the week, consider what can be delegated or deleted entirely. For example, in the “Work” category you might be the only one who can meet with upper management to review your goals, but possibly one of your staff can run the project review. Or maybe you can combine lunch with your boss and the review of your goals.
For “Family & Activities,” possibly none of the items can be deleted, but carpooling with another family can certainly add hours back into your week by only having to lose one-way’s worth of travel.
Do this review category by category and you will be shocked at how many hours you can free up. Fifteen minutes here and ten minutes there can add up to hours that are free for you to do with as you please. Keep in mind that it is OK to delegate and to say “no.” You have one life to live and you should spend it wisely.
