Cedarvale Winery:
The Making of a Vineyard
by Marsha Gaventa

If you told me 10 years ago that I
would own a winery one day I would have never believed it! My husband, Ed and I own and operate Cedarvale Winery located in Logan Township. I would love to share our story with you.
My husband is a 4th generation farmer on the farm that we live and work. Several years back my husband was asked if he would grow wine grapes to sell to another winery. Ed thought this would be a good addition to the farm. In 2004 we started the vineyard with one acre of Merlot and one acre of Chardonnay.
In 2006 we added one acre of Cabernet Franc.
In 2007 we added half an acre of
Shiraz and half an acre of Pinot Grigio.
One day Ed asked me what I thought of us having our own winery. I loved the idea! What we did first was put part of the farm in farmland preservation.
That means we sold our development rights to the state. With the money we received from the state we built a winery that we could afford. We did the majority of the work ourselves. It took us 3 years from the beginning process until opening day.
The front half of the building is the tasting room. It’s a cute, comfortable room that can hold up to 50 people. You feel welcome when you walk through the front doors into the tasting room. It’s like walking into a friend’s house. The walls are warm in color and the wine is wonderful. We have private parties, baby showers, retirement parties, music nights, fundraisers and more!
We use the back room as the wine production area
We opened Cedarvale Winery October 4, 2008.
We were so excited and we still are! Over 500 people came in that first weekend to celebrate our “Grand Opening." It was awesome as well as inspiring! We started with four wines on that first day. Currently we have eight wines on our wine tasting list.

We hope to have more vines and wines in the future. Because we are actually out of room in the production area, we are looking forward to the 40’ x 60’ addition that is going off the back of the winery. We just got the building permits this week! My husband and I are very fortunate to have supportive family and friends. Without all our helpers we would not be where we are today.
Tasting room hours are:
- Thursday and Friday 12 to 7PM
- Saturday 11AM to 7PM
- Sunday 11AM to 5PM
We invite you to stop by to visit us, enjoy our wine, join us for a music night or just hang out. Visit our website for more information www.cedarvalewinery.com
Now I ask you, where do you see yourself in 10 years?
